Afrofuturism projects African and diasporic culture into science fiction and the cosmos: interfaces that read like a star chart, a royal banner, and a launch console at once. Deep space black is edged with gold, burnt orange, and royal purple; African geometric patterns frame sunbursts and constellations instead of neoclassical ornament. It has traveled from Sun Ra's cosmic jazz to the Wakandan UI of Black Panther.

This is Afrofuturism because the geometry is drawn from African pattern languages — mud-cloth grids, kente chevrons, adinkra-like symbols — and the palette is warm cosmic metal (gold, burnt orange, royal purple) on a starfield. The ornament is telling a diasporic science-fiction story, not a 1920s luxury story.

Origin起源
The term was coined by cultural critic Mark Dery in his 1993 essay 'Black to the Future' — interviews with Samuel R. Delany, Greg Tate, and Tricia Rose that named a current already running through Sun Ra's cosmic jazz persona (developed from the early 1950s), George Clinton's Parliament-Funkadelic Mothership mythology (notably the 1975 Mothership Connection album and tour), and the fiction of Octavia Butler. Scholar Alondra Nelson then gave the field an institutional home by launching the AfroFuturism listserv in 1999. The look entered mainstream UI consciousness through album art, editorial design, and especially Ryan Coogler's Black Panther (2018), where production designer Hannah Beachler and costume designer Ruth E. Carter imagined Wakandan technology through African forms.
