Cassette Futurism is the retro-futurist look of the 1980s and early 1990s imagined through analog consumer technology: CRT phosphor glow, VHS tracking bands, cassette and tape-deck chrome, beige plastic hardware, wireframe vector graphics, and grid horizons rendered on blocky low-res screens. It is not the polished digital future of the 2000s; it is a future pieced together from cathode-ray tubes, audio tapes, and early computer GUIs — lo-fi, warm, and slightly degraded.

CRT phosphor glow on a dark screen can look high-contrast, but thin scanlines and bloom halos reduce readability. Keep body text on solid dark plates and use heavier bitmap fonts at 12px or larger; green #33ff00 on #0b0d0f clears 4.5:1 comfortably, but amber #ffb000 and cyan #00e5ff can fail at thin weights.

VHS tracking bands, tape roll, and chromatic wobble are motion-heavy and can trigger vestibular or photosensitive reactions. Keep flashes under 3 per second, disable drift and glitch entirely under prefers-reduced-motion, and never place essential content inside the distorted layer.

The look draws from 1980s–early-1990s consumer electronics and science-fiction production design: cathode-ray tube monitors, cassette decks, VHS packaging and playback artifacts, and the blocky, resolution-limited GUIs of early Macintosh, Amiga, and Atari ST systems. Films such as Blade Runner (1982), Alien (1979), RoboCop (1987), and the television series Max Headroom (1985) stamped the public imagination with CRT interfaces, wireframe vector graphics, and phosphor-green readouts. The term "cassette futurism" gained currency in the 2010s alongside the Synthwave and Vaporwave revivals, used to describe a future imagined through analog, lo-fi media rather than digital polish.
