Psychedelic design is the visual language of the 1960s counterculture: saturated rainbow gradients, melting organic forms, Art Nouveau-inspired hand lettering, and optical patterns that seem to vibrate. It grew from concert posters for rock bands like the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, where artists borrowed Eastern mandalas, paisley, flower-power flora, and whiplash curves to evoke altered perception. The palette is bright and unapologetic - hot pinks, oranges, violets, and lime greens in flowing washes - and the mood is utopian, mystical, and handmade rather than dark or digital.

Psychedelic art emerged in the mid-1960s alongside the counterculture and psychedelic rock scenes of San Francisco and London. In the United States, the so-called 'Big Five' of poster art - Wes Wilson, Victor Moscoso, Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, and Alton Kelley - defined the look for venues such as the Fillmore Auditorium and the Avalon Ballroom, drawing on Art Nouveau, Indian miniatures, and Op Art. British artist Martin Sharp produced iconic posters for Cream and Jimi Hendrix, while Peter Max carried the style into broader pop graphics and commercial licensing in the late 1960s and 1970s. The style faded with the end of the hippie era but revives whenever design wants to signal altered perception, utopianism, or handmade excess.
